What to prepare before you build a website
By Dominic Binotubo · · 4 min read
The biggest cause of website projects running late isn't the code. It's waiting for content, decisions and logins. Get these six things ready before you start and your project will move faster and usually cost less.
1. A clear goal
What should the website do for your business? More WhatsApp enquiries, online sales, bookings, or simply looking credible when people search for you? One main goal shapes every page, so decide it first.
2. Your content
Text for each page: who you are, what you offer, prices if you show them, and how to contact you. Add good photos of your products, team or space. Phone photos in good daylight are often better than old stock images.
Don't have the words? Copywriting can be added to your project, but you'll still need to share the facts about your business.
3. Brand assets
Your logo (ideally as an SVG or a large PNG), brand colours and any fonts you use. If you don't have a brand yet, a logo and brand kit can be designed first.
4. Examples you like (and don't)
Share two or three websites you like and say what you like about them: the layout, colours, how simple it feels. Examples you dislike are just as useful.
5. Accounts and access
If you already have a domain name or hosting, find the logins. If you don't, they can be set up for you, registered in your name so you always own them.
6. One decision-maker
Choose one person who gives feedback and approves each stage. Projects slow down when feedback comes from several people who disagree.
Ready?
If you have most of this, you're in a great position. See pricing or start your project.
