AI-built website vs one made by a developer: the honest truth
By Dominic Binotubo · · 8 min read
I'm a web developer, so you might expect me to tell you AI websites are rubbish. They're not. For some people, an AI website builder is genuinely the right choice, and paying a developer would be a waste of money. For others, it's a false saving that costs more later. This article tells you which is which, honestly.
First, what do we actually mean?
An AI website builder is a tool where you type something like "a website for my bakery in Abuja" and it creates pages, text and images for you in minutes. Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger, Framer and many others now have AI features. Some newer tools write the actual website code for you from a description.
A developer or agency is a person or team you pay to plan, design and build your website for your business. A freelancer is usually one person; an agency is a company with several people (designers, developers, writers, project managers).
One more honest point: most good developers now use AI too, to work faster. The real question isn't "AI or human". It's "do I want a tool I drive myself, or an expert who takes responsibility for the result?"
Where AI website builders genuinely win
1. Cost
This is the big one. AI builders usually charge a monthly or yearly subscription, often from a few dollars to around $50 a month depending on the features. A custom website from a developer is a much larger one-time cost. If money is tight, an AI builder lets you get online today.
2. Speed
You can have something live in an afternoon. A developer-built site takes days to weeks, because there's planning, design, building, your feedback and testing.
3. You're in control
You can change text, swap photos and add pages yourself whenever you like, without waiting for anyone.
4. Good enough for simple needs
If you need a basic page with who you are, what you do, your prices and a WhatsApp button, an AI builder can do that well. A lot of small businesses never needed a custom website in the first place.
Where AI website builders fall short (the parts the ads don't mention)
1. Your site looks like everyone else's
AI builders work from templates and patterns. The result is usually clean, but it often looks generic: the same layouts, the same stock-style images, the same phrases like "Welcome to our website" and "We are passionate about quality". If your competitors used the same tool, your sites may look almost identical. In a crowded market, looking forgettable costs sales.
2. The words are often empty
AI writes text that sounds professional but says very little about your business. Customers can feel it. Google's guidance also says it rewards content that shows real experience and expertise, so generic AI text doesn't help you show up in search.
3. Google visibility needs work AI often skips
Being found on Google (called SEO, search engine optimisation) depends on details most people never see: the page titles and descriptions that appear in search results, how pages are structured, how fast the site loads, and hidden information that tells Google what your business is. Reviews of AI-built sites keep finding the same gaps: missing or generic page descriptions, weak titles and no structured information for Google. Some builders handle this well; many leave it to you, and most owners don't know it's there.
4. You may not really own it
This is the one that hurts later. With many builders, your website only works on their platform. Wix, for example, says in its own help centre that a Wix site can't be hosted anywhere else. If the price goes up, the company changes its rules, or you outgrow it, you often can't take your website with you. You can usually export some content, like blog posts or product lists, but the design and layout stay behind and you start again.
Tip: whatever you use, buy your domain name (yourbusiness.com) separately from a registrar, in your own name, so you can always point it somewhere else.
5. It can be slower than it looks
Builders load a lot of extra code so they can support every possible feature, even ones you don't use. Large images that aren't shrunk properly are common too. On slower mobile connections, which matter a lot in Nigeria, that can make your site feel sluggish. Speed matters: Google's own research found that as a mobile page's load time goes from 1 to 3 seconds, the chance of a visitor leaving goes up by 32%.
6. Accessibility is often missed
Accessibility means making sure everyone can use your site, including people with poor eyesight or who use screen readers (software that reads web pages aloud). Auto-generated sites often have text that's hard to read against its background, or image descriptions that don't match the image. These aren't things a tool reliably checks for you.
7. When something breaks, it's on you
If your payment button stops working at 11pm on a Friday, there's no one to call except a support chat. You also become the website's designer, writer, photographer and maintenance person, which takes time away from running your business.
Where a developer or agency genuinely wins
- It's built around your business. A good developer asks who your customers are, what they worry about and what you want them to do, then designs the site to make that happen. That thinking is the real value, not just the design.
- It looks like you, not a template. A unique design helps you stand out and look established, which matters most for premium businesses.
- Custom features. Booking systems, guided ordering, customer accounts, dashboards, calculators and anything the builder can't do.
- Done properly under the hood. Speed, Google setup, security and accessibility handled by someone who knows what to check.
- Someone to call. When something goes wrong or you need changes, there's a person who knows your site.
- Real ownership, if your agreement says so. You should get the code, the domain and the accounts in your name.
Where developers and agencies fall short (also the raw truth)
- It costs more upfront. There's no way around it. You're paying for skilled time.
- It takes longer. Usually days to weeks, and longer if your content (text, photos, prices) isn't ready.
- Quality varies wildly. Some "developers" just install a cheap template and charge custom prices. Some agencies charge a lot for very little.
- Some hold your site hostage. The worst ones register your domain in their own name, never give you the logins, or vanish after being paid. Then you're stuck.
- You may depend on them for changes, unless they give you an easy way to edit content yourself.
How to protect yourself if you hire someone
Ask these questions before you pay anything:
- "Will the domain and hosting be in my name?" The answer must be yes.
- "Can I see sites you've built, and talk to one past client?"
- "Is this a template or a custom design?" Either can be fine, but you should know what you're paying for.
- "What exactly is included, and how many rounds of changes?" Get it in writing.
- "Can I update text and photos myself afterwards?"
- "What happens if something breaks after launch?" Is there free support for a period?
- "How will payments be split?" Paying in stages (for example, a deposit, then more as work is approved) protects both sides. Be careful with anyone who wants 100% upfront.
So which should you choose?
Choose an AI website builder if:
- You're just starting and your budget is very small.
- You need a simple site: who you are, what you do, prices, contact.
- You enjoy doing it yourself and have the time to learn and maintain it.
- Looking unique isn't critical in your market.
Hire a developer or agency if:
- Your website needs to win serious clients or justify premium prices.
- You need something specific: online orders, bookings, payments, accounts or custom tools.
- You want to be found on Google for competitive searches.
- Your time is better spent running your business than building a website.
- You want someone responsible when things go wrong.
The middle path: start with a builder to prove the business works, then move to a custom site when you're ready to grow. Just keep your domain in your own name and your photos and text saved somewhere you control, so moving is easy.
